Why Do We Pee?
Firstly, it’s important to know why we pee. The body has a cleaning system. Our kidneys clean extra water and waste from our blood. This waste turns into pee. The pee then goes to a small bag in our bodies, the bladder.
Your Bladder's Capacity
Usually, your bladder can hold about one to two cups of pee without feeling uncomfortable. But if you often hold your pee for a long time, your bladder can stretch and hold more.
There was a study of nurses who had to hold their pee because of work. The study found their bladders could hold almost double the normal amount!
The Risk of Holding Your Pee
But just because you can hold it doesn’t mean you should. When you hold your pee, you might also stretch your pee gatekeepers, or external sphincter muscles. These muscles control when you pee. If you stretch them too much, you might lose control over them.
Here’s what might happen:
Leaking: You might start to leak pee when your bladder is full.
Not Emptying Completely: You might not empty your bladder all the way when you do pee.
These things can make you need to pee more often. They can also cause a serious problem called urinary retention. This is when too much pee stays in your bladder for too long.
The Danger of Urinary Retention
Your bladder is like a warm, wet bag of waste. It’s the perfect place for harmful bacteria to grow. If pee stays in your bladder for too long, these bacteria can cause damage.
In the worst cases, too much pee can flow back into your kidneys. This can cause kidney failure and can even lead to death.
The Bottom Line
Now, don’t worry too much. You would usually lose control and pee before your bladder reached this danger point. But why risk it? It’s better to go to the bathroom when you need to.
Yes, I know, your movie is so good you don’t want to miss any part of it. But holding in your pee once in a while for a short time is okay. So go ahead, enjoy the movie. Just remember to take a bathroom break when you need one!
